Safe Test Browser is a web browser site to perform e-tests securely. Software temporarily transforms any computer into a secure operating system. The diagram above shows two internal components containing the SEB, a key application and a browser component. A third of the natural SEB test is built on supported LMS. Individually one or more third party applications may be permitted to process the test and be implemented by the SEB kiosk system.

The kiosk app shuts down the computer and launches SEB browser and third-party applications. Since this application is supposed to control various OS functions, it is designed for a specific application.

The SEB browser uploads and displays the LMS test page using a pre-set URL and does not display any navigation objects such as address bar, search engine field etc. Windows version SEB currently uses the Mozilla Gecko browser engine, either in the form of Firefox or XULRunner. The SEB for macOS and iOS uses the WebKit browser engine.

Learning management systems have modules called questionnaires, which are used for online tests. The SEB relies on extensions / skins in the Moodle and ILIAS query modules for safe tests. With these extensions the LMS user interface has been reduced to contain only test navigation (no links to other pages other than queries) and no other unpleasant features such as messaging. The test can be configured to work only with SEB, not another browser. These SEB LMS extensions, which should have been set aside separately to achieve this SEB connection, are integrated with the LMS in the latest versions of ILIAS and Moodle.

Windows SEB

Windows Safe Exam Browser contains a SEB kiosk application application, which opens the Windows desktop and disables program commands such as keyboard shortcuts (for example ALT + F4) and right-clicking buttons. The second part is Firefox, which works in XUL runtime mode. The SEB XUL browser application running on Firefox connects to LMS, using the pre-configured URL. The SEB browser has no URL or search field and navigation controls (back / forward, reload) can be disabled.

SEB for macOS and iOS

In contrast to the Windows version, Safe Exam Browser for macOS and iOS is a monolithic application using a web browser framework instead of a browser runtime. It uses the WebKit engine, on which Safari and other open source browsers are supported. Alternatively, the SEB macOS / iOS connects to Learning Management Systems in the same way as the Windows version.
